The people at Nintendo knew that in order to compete with the other established big name home video game brands (Sony and Microsoft) that they would have to come up with a new way to play video games. That is exactly what they have achieved with the Nintendo Wii and in the process revolutionised the way that we play video games now and into the future.

Sony and Microsoft have created powerful and graphically amazing consoles but they are still the same old way of playing video games, sit in front of the TV screen and push buttons on a controller to play. This is the area where Nintendo felt they could win the battle of the home video game console, in the way the games are played.

Controlling Nintendo Wii games

Like the other consoles you use controllers to play the games but with the Wii they are used in a totally different and original way. Here are the controllers and an explanation on how to use them.

Wii Remote: This is the main controller for the console and it uses infrared and the latest motion sensing technology. What this essentially means is that a player can control the actions of video game character by pointing and moving the remote around. A sensor bar will pick up on these actions and video game characters and items will mimic the player’s actions. E.g. the remote becomes a golf club in the Wii sports game. So now instead of just pushing a button, you are controlling game movements with your own body movements, amazing. The remote also has a speaker and rumble feature.

Nunchuck: The Nunchuck is a gun-shaped controller which uses the same motion technology as the remote but also features the more classical control stick and buttons. This controller is designed to be used in conjunction with the remote in certain games. Sounds confusing but every game will give you instructions on how to use them together. Suits both right and left handed players.

Sensor bar: The sensor bar is what picks up the infra red signals from the Wii remote and nunchuck. Up to four remotes can be used at any one time from a maximum distance of 30 feet.

Who can play on the Nintendo Wii

One of the best features of Wii is the fact that it is enjoyed by people from all walks of life. There is such a huge variety of games from every sort of genre that everyone will find a game they love to play. I would recommend Nintendo Wii to:

• Families. There is a game suitable for everyone in your family, right from the toddlers to the grandparents. It is an awesome way for the family to have fun together.

• Home console video game lovers. Even though it may not be the traditional way to play it is the way of the future. If you love to play games from home than you will love this fresh and original concept. You don’t get to just play the game; you get to be the game.

• Great for those wanting to be more active. Nintendo Wii is reported to have helped some people lose weight because they are not just sitting they are moving, jumping, swinging their arms and sweating. The games get the muscles moving, heart pumping and burns calories

• Parents with Video game loving children. It can sometimes be a worry when your child spends too much time in front of the TV playing games. With the Wii the child is not only playing but they are exercising at the same time, without them even knowing it.

The Nintendo Wii is winning the battle of the home video game console for the simple reasons it is original, gives video game lovers a whole new experience but most of all it is fun. With all of this talk of the Nintendo Wii I think I will go give mine a whirl right now.
